RememberTo Give Your Garden Attention During Winter Months

By Melanie Lee

Lots of us tend to forget about our gardens during the winter when it feels too cold to spend time outside. It might be much colder but it is the ideal time to get your preparation and groundwork out of the way.

During this period there is a lot of clearing up to do. Fallen leaves can be used to make rich compost once they have broken down, so rake them up and store them in bags for later. Weed flowerbeds and remove as many of the roots as you can or they will be springing up again before you know it. If you still have old annual and biannual plants in your beds, take them out now. To improve the amount of air and drainage in the soil, rake it over when you have finished your weeding.

Trim and prune your shrubs, hedges and trees prior to spring growth.

If you are planning to create new beds the winter is the ideal time to dig them out ready for the spring. Compost can take a bit of time to break down and improve the soil so add it as soon as you have finished. Plants are able to grow bigger and stronger in healthy composted soil. This is the right time for preparing your veggie patch, so dig it over and prepare the soil in this area here too. It is a great feeling to get these tasks completed in plenty of time for when you are ready to start planting. You can work around existing winter vegetables, they will also benefit from some compost on the topsoil around them.

You may feel your garden lacks colour and vibrancy at this time of year and you want some ideas, visit a garden centre for attractive winter flowering plants and shrubs. Any garden can stay attractive and interesting all year. Add some appeal to your winter garden with a variety of stunning plants.

For attractive winter shrubs try Winter Honeysuckle or Winter Jasmine. Pyracantha and Holly are also excellent shrubs for winter colour. For a rich display of colour, Iris and Crocus are great Winter choices. Mix a selection of different Heathers together for an attractive look. You will always find a knowledgable member of staff on hand in your local garden centre for advice regarding planting ideas.
