Decorating With Unique Handmade Wooden Accent Pieces

By Rosalind Estes

There are several ways in which to decorate with unique handmade wooden accent pieces in any design scheme. First decide whether the piece will be used as your focal point in your space. Although it is an accent piece, there are no rules on how to use it in your interior design and you may want to build your space entirely around it. You may also choose to use the piece to inspire the mood of your design.

The way to use your wood accent piece as the focal point in your design is to place it in the space in such a way that when you enter the room, you are immediately drawn in its direction. Make all your other decorations surrounding the focal point symmetrical in placement. This will draw the eyes to your piece you want accentuated in the room.

If you have a handmade wood bench, for example, try placing it diagonal in the corner and have it face the room entrance. Put one vase on either side of the bench and fill it with different types of foliage. Change the vase of foliage out for a floral design or a medium sized tree, depending on your preference.

To use your piece to inspire the mood of your design rather than pop as the focal point, consider using several like pieces in the space. This will create the mood without singling out a part of the design. To give an example, imagine you found a wood dining chair with woven dark brown abaca hemp. You want to use this in your space but not as a focal point. Consider getting six to eight of these chairs. You can surround a table and place a vignette of abaca woven vases, baskets or candle holders to tie in with the chairs. It is a simple design, but the chairs and abaca vignette together can create a subdued tropical island mood.

Remember to bring harmony to your space. All your design pieces should make sense for the mood that you have chosen. If the piece does not have anything to do with your mood, take it out. Even if it is a beautiful wooden piece you wish you could use.

Finally, do not forget that the room you design must still have a function. Putting a bench in a space is creating a sitting area and has a function. Placing a dining table with chairs creates a place to eat. When decorating with your Unique handmade wooden accent pieces, as long as you remember to maintain a function for the space, create a mood and harmonize the design, you will be successful.
