Looking At Skid Steer Choices

By Jaylon O. Eberts

One of the most important pieces of equipment in the building industry is the skid-steer loader. Although this machine looks very much like a tractor with an attached bucket it has many other features. The similarity ends there and there are many skid steer choices.

The first type of this machine was designed to accommodate a farmer who found it difficult to shovel turkey leavings out of his barn. It shaved hours of work off the common hand shoveling method. The current version of the skid steer appeared in 1960 and has had many features added on since that time.

While it has four wheels, they are locked in to mechanically synchronize on each side of the vehicle. This allows the right side to be driven without interference from the left side. As a result, when movement is made it skids it wheels rather than turning them individually.

There is a wide range of the things this machine can do. What ordinarily would require a number of machines this one just requires changing attachments. These include things such as trenchers, augers, wood pallets, sweepers, and a long list of other things. In addition, some models have add-on controls which allow certain items to be exchanged from the interior of the cab. Having one machine to do versatile tasks is a great money saver.

There are a number of different brands and types of machines now on the market. For that reason it is important to determine your exact needs to be sure the purchase will be able to perform all the tasks required. There are both new and used models available on the market, many at bargain prices. For temporary use some people choose rentals.

The controls on this equipment is highly modified which makes them simple to operate. A joystick easily handles the reverse and forward as well as steering changes. Speed management control will match the speed of the equipment with the time required to properly perform the job.

The foot throttle, fingertip switches, control pattern, drive response and steering drift compensation are all at the fingertips of the driver. This utilizes all the qualities of the machine while avoiding a condition that can cause damage to the machine as well as allow it to adjust to the jobsite conditions and avoid an incorrect job performance. With the many skid steer choices it is possible to get a piece of equipment that will fulfill every requirement of the job.
